Poole Referee is the phone app a referee scores a bout from. It is the companion to this site, where the competition itself is created and run. If something is not working, the answer is probably below — and if it is not, write to us and we will answer.
1. What you need before you start
A six-digit code. Only the organiser of the competition can issue one, from the referee page of their poule or tournament on this site. The app cannot create a competition and cannot invent a code — if you have not been given one, the person running the event is who to ask.
A poule has one code for the whole card. A knockout bout has a code of its own, one per bout, because each one is refereed on its own piste.
2. Connecting
- Open the app. The first screen asks for the code.
- Type the six digits, or tap to scan the QR code the organiser is showing.
- The card opens on the bout that is next to be fenced.
Scanning is the same code, read by the camera instead of typed. The camera is used for nothing else, and no photograph is kept or sent anywhere.
3. The timer works on its own
From the first screen you can open the timer without a code, without a competition, and without a network. It is a full bout clock — periods, rest, sudden death, passivity — and it works offline. If you only came for a clock at the side of a piste, you never need to connect at all.
4. When it will not connect
"That code is not valid." Either a digit is wrong, or the organiser has issued a new code since you were given yours. Issuing a new code retires the old one on purpose, so that an organiser can always take a competition back. Ask for the current one.
You are asked for the code again, mid-event. A connected device stays connected for an hour of inactivity, and the hour restarts every time you do something. Type the same code again — it survives being used, so it still works.
Another phone took over. One device referees a piste at a time. Connecting a second device to the same code detaches the first, rather than leaving two phones scoring the same strip.
"This competition has finished." The card has been fenced and the fencers have gone into a knockout bracket. The bracket runs on a code per bout — ask for the one for your piste.
The camera will not open. The app asks for the camera the first time you scan. If it was refused, iOS will not ask again — turn it back on in Settings → Poole Referee → Camera. You can always type the six digits instead.
There is no signal at the venue. Scores you enter are kept on the phone and sent when the network comes back. Keep refereeing; nothing is lost by being offline, and the order the results arrive in does not matter.
